Happy Thursday, folks! :)

Phew, I know... this is a LOT of talk on the page! :'D Thanks for bearing with it.

I'm trailing a lot of breadcrumbs everywhere as to where this chapter is headed, but I know it's not really easy to keep track when those breadcrumbs come once a month XD;;; so here are some breadcrumb locations to complement this particular page:

* Archer says on two occasions that the tournament might be 'interesting' and 'unsafe'.
* Briar mentions hiring 'bozos' for a vague purpose.
* There was historical tension between Imperia and Clandest, seen in the story of King Titus and the Dancer.
* The previous page connects a great deal with this one, though hopefully that was a more obvious connect-the-dots right there. XD;
* Just as an aside, you'll see that Clandest has a capital on the world map and the main party is currently in Jem Citadel, the fortress city on the border of Clandest. It isn't explicitly stated in-comic (yet) but hopefully it can be inferred that Jem Citadel guards the border of Clandest that isn't already surrounded by treacherous paths like Fracture Pass.

I hope this helps! ;v;*

It's Easter holiday for me starting tomorrow, and I'll be out of town on a church retreat for the weekend. :) I should still be back well enough on time to update on Monday as per usual, though!

Happy Easter, folks, and have a happy Thursday <3 thanks so much for reading!! ;v;*

Good thing those thugs were careful not to have an important conversation in a spot where no one unexpected could possibly overhear them. ;-)

Happy Easter! :-)

All those double negatives are throwing me, KAM! :'D *is thrown*

And if no one had conveniently ebil conversations to eavesdrop on, we'd be bored, wouldn't we? Lolol -v-)b

Hope you had a good one btw~ X3

Wow, so, they want to kill everybody??? =O

...and it is indeed abel that is visiting Cain...?

...and how is archer involved???

They seem to want to do something drastic, indeed! >_>

We should be very worried if Abel is able to be up and about again... :'D

How indeed is Archer involved? ._.

So, this post probably requires a bit of explanation. My apologies.

I occasionally indulge in 'fractured lyrics'. Other terms I have used (or heard used) for this include 'filksinging' or just 'giving something the Weird Al treatment'. However, here, @DLKmusic used (coined?) the term 'satiralyric' for it. Naturally a new word is cool, and this was a cool new word to me, so I went to the InterNet to see if this was original or I had just been missing out all this time. ^_^

I found no uses of this term in that way, but I did find this. ("Satira", by Alma Mater) So, I said to myself, "Cool. I guess I need to do a real Satira lyric!" ^_^ And I put this together. (Imagining it coming from Cain's POV).

In this effort, I was hampered by only a couple of additional factors (besides a twisted sense of humor and lack of talent ^_^). One, @rufiangel has been very secretive about what "Serpamia Flare" actually is. We know it's a Silver Magic spell that Cain's brother tried to learn (using nefarious means) from Kylie's mother -- but we don't really know yet what it does. (Unless I missed or forgot that somewhere. ^_^) Two, I don't speak Portuguese. (Or Italian. Or whatever language the original song is written in.)

So, I am parodying something I don't understand, with lyrics about something I don't understand, for purposes no one understands ... understand? ^_^. That having been said ... here it is:

-----------------------------

Something is moving -- a force collecting, feel it draw
In Archaeia.
If I am staying
It will be slaying
So I flee to keep from falling to its claw.

It's Serpamia
Silver taint in the air.
There's no shield from the flare.
When the Blesse'd One nears,
It's the time of our fears.
Until I find my key
I must risk my friends to stay free.
Just to stay free ...

Serpamia

The new millennium
Is fast approaching.
How can Fate demand of me that I decide
To save the world and save myself, or shield
The one my heart is holding deep inside
Serpamia

My hope is fading,
My strength degrading,
My faith is dwindling,
But love is kindling.
...

Well, it was not Cain's brother abel - but his predecessor / mentor / teacher / previous silver mage with no connection to abel (but I doubt that)

Great one though :)

Gilrandir 14th Apr 2017, 6:13 AM edit delete reply
Was it, @mjkj? Whoops, my mistake. I only recall Kylie's mom saying "silver mage" and (other than her) figured Abel was the only other one of which we know. I didn't think we had any hard and fast data about relative ages, and when magic is involved I figure we can't rule out the possibility Cain is much older than Kylie, so both he and his brother could have been around at the time. But I could well be mistaken.

That'd be a real wild hypothesis: the person who confronted Kylie's mom was a forty-year old silver mage named "Isaac". In the confrontation and resultant magic mis-cast that occurs when Kylie wakes up mid-spell, Isaac is split into two twenty-year olds, "Cain" and "Abel", both of whom have silver mage talents! ^_^ Cain gets all the niceness, and Abel gets the "other bits". Of course, that leaves open the question of who their mysterious mother is?
mjkj 14th Apr 2017, 3:01 PM edit delete reply
mjkj
Well, @Gil, I think Rufi mentioned it somewhere (in the comments or even disqus), if I remember correctly, furthermore abel would have been too young for that at that time...

You are right about that abel is the only silver mage we know, but we also know he had a mentor or master/ tutor of whom Cain disapproved...

I like your theory about Isaac - might be that the mother in that case could have been Isaac's wife...

Gilrandir 15th Apr 2017, 1:37 AM edit delete reply
Or the mother could be Isaac's mother, which would make her age closer to that of Cain and Abel's grandmother, but plausibly have both the boys still thinking of her as 'mother'.

@Gil: Well, THAT'S an interesting wild hypothesis! <333 I like it! :D
Gilrandir 20th Apr 2017, 1:58 PM edit delete reply
It's a lot easier coming up with atrocious puns than twisted plot lines, so (if you don't mind) I'll leave the storytelling to you from now on.

Besides, if we went with my idea, I'd have to ding you for the typo. It would make both Cain and Abel 'Sliver Mages'. ^_^

@Mjkj: I think you might be remembering something else, Mjkj... XD; I have never said anything to confirm or deny or even clarify the identity of the Silver Mage that appeared at Halehurst~

@Gilrandir, both you and @DLKmusic complain of having no talent, but then produce well crafted pieces. If these are no-talent, then my skills in this area would have to be in the negative double or triple digit range :p

As far as following bread crumbs goes, I can see the variables, but haven't made any conclusion yet.

@Gil: Well done as always! I had to familiarize myself with the song, which even included an argument with Google Translate (I lost, btw... I still don't know what the original song's about).

Incredibly well crafted, and a cool dark background to go with a dark verse.
Gilrandir 15th Apr 2017, 8:46 AM edit delete reply
Darn, I was hoping someone out there would be able to translate the original for me. ^_^

Thanks for the feedback. I was glad that the song turned out to be something I could write for, rather than being something completely out of my comfort zone. But I think, in the future, I'll probably stick to satiralyricizing English language material.

EDIT: Apparently Alma Mater is a fado group, implying the lyrics are, in fact Portuguese. Google Translate, however, thinks they are Italian (and doesn't make a lot of sense).

Also, for some reason one of my browsers (Chrome) started telling me today that this website was "not secure" (and blocking me from accessing it). With my other browsers it works just fine, so it might just be Chrome going crazy on me? I dunno, but I thought I should mention this. :/

By the way, I'm still having problems with your website on Google Chrome, with the most recent pages (for some reason older pages are okay). Also though, I seem to only have this problem with the "serpamiaflare.com" page, not with the other two (...is there a reason you have three different CF domains?)

The pieces are all coming together...and man this guy gets dad of the year for putting both his kids in harm's way >:( He'll be surprised his beloved daughter has failed to beat Kylie.
And it's times like this I wish I had a print version of SF so I could quickly flip back and find this "package" you speak of XD
I'm still trying to sort out how Abel and Co. relate to Zirconia, and how all the infighting between species, nations, etc relate (there is a lot of complex conflict in your world!) So much depth, it's awesome!
Lukkai 14th Apr 2017, 8:14 PM edit delete reply
Lukkai
I'm more and more getting the feeling that at least one of Abel's (and his mother's, probably) plans is to conquer and rule the whole world.

And that of course is done easiest if anyone who could oppose you is fighting among themselves. So they're at least kindling the flames between the various factions, all the while secretly eliminating key factors that might hinder their plans. Which obviously includes this particular fortress city.

The reason why Zirconia is in cahoots with them? Could simply be money. Could be they were promised a lot of power in the realm to come. Or some other reward. There's lots you can give, once you rule the world.
(Granted: There's no guarantee they will honour their pledge after the deed is done.)

And thank you so much Proxy for such kind words ;v;*** I promise that it all relates together - it'll take some time for me to unpack but I hope it'll be a fun journey getting there!
